Mark & Rosemary’s Dorset Autumn Wedding

There is something particularly special about an autumn wedding in Dorset, and Mark and Rosemary’s wedding in Studland in early October 2022 was a wonderful example of just how beautiful this time of year can be.

Mark and Rosemary are both keen cyclists, but neither of them particularly enjoys being the centre of attention. From the beginning, they wanted their wedding photography to feel relaxed, natural and low key. They weren’t looking for hours of posed photographs or a day constantly interrupted by the camera. Instead, they wanted me to document the wedding as it happened: the people, the laughter, the ceremony and all those little moments that become part of the story.

They booked me for eight hours of wedding photography, giving us plenty of time to cover their day across three very different Dorset locations without ever needing to rush.

The day began in the beautiful village of Studland, with the wedding ceremony taking place at St Nicholas Church.

It is a wonderful setting for a traditional Dorset church wedding, with its ancient stonework, characterful interior and intimate atmosphere.

Before the ceremony I was able to photograph Mark with his groomsmen and capture some relaxed portraits while everyone gathered. I also spent time photographing Rosemary before the ceremony, along with the bridesmaids and flower girls.

Because Mark and Rosemary wanted the photography to remain unobtrusive, much of the ceremony was photographed in the documentary style I particularly enjoy: expressions, glances, laughter and the reactions of family and friends rather than continually asking people to look towards the camera.

The light coming through the church windows also created some wonderful moments during the ceremony, bringing warmth and colour into the historic stone interior.

And, of course, no traditional church wedding would be complete without confetti.

Mark and Rosemary emerged from the church surrounded by friends and family, producing some of my favourite photographs from the day.

After the ceremony we made the short journey down towards Studland Beach.

For many couples it would be tempting to spend a long time creating dozens of posed portraits in a location like this. But that simply wasn't Mark and Rosemary.

They were both quite shy in front of the camera, and respecting that was important.

Rather than turning their wedding afternoon into a photoshoot, we took a short walk on the beach and created a relatively small collection of relaxed couple portraits.

And that was more than enough.

With the calm water, boats in the bay, blue autumn sky and the Purbeck coastline behind them, the location did much of the work for us.

Some of my favourite wedding photographs are often the simplest ones: a couple walking together, talking to each other or forgetting for a few moments that I am even there.

We were also able to bring their guests together for one large group photograph on the beach — a fantastic way of capturing almost everyone who had shared the day with them while making the most of that unmistakably Dorset backdrop.

One of the advantages of having eight hours of coverage is that there is room in the day to take advantage of locations along the way without everything feeling rushed.

Leaving Studland, we stopped briefly for photographs with the wonderful views across the Purbeck countryside and Poole Harbour.

Again, we kept things simple.

A couple of portraits, a few quiet moments together and then it was time to continue to the reception.

The third location of the day was Bulbury Woods Golf Club, where Mark and Rosemary held their wedding reception.

By this point the photography naturally moved back towards candid coverage: guests enjoying themselves, conversations, family photographs, the cake and all the little interactions happening around the room.

There was another lovely nod to Mark and Rosemary's love of cycling on their wedding cake, with a personalised Mr & Mrs Williams cycling cake topper — a small detail that made the wedding unmistakably theirs.

As the afternoon light softened, we also stepped outside for a few photographs around the golf course. Autumn weddings can produce some beautiful low sunlight later in the day, and the grounds gave us another completely different backdrop from the church and beach earlier.

Then came the cake cutting and the evening celebrations.

One of the joys of staying into the evening is watching the formal part of the wedding gradually disappear. Jackets come off, children take over the dance floor and everyone simply starts enjoying themselves.

Those photographs are often some of the most genuine of the whole day.

Mark and Rosemary's wedding is a good example of why wedding photography doesn't have to mean spending your day posing for photographs.

Across their eight hours of coverage we photographed their story at St Nicholas Church in Studland, Studland Beach and Bulbury Woods Golf Club, as well as making a short stop in the Purbeck countryside.

But the photography was fitted around their wedding — not the other way around.

There were traditional family photographs when they wanted them, a short relaxed session on the beach and some beautiful Dorset scenery, but the majority of the day was about simply documenting what happened.

For couples who tell me “we're not very comfortable in front of a camera”, that is absolutely fine.

You don't need to be.

My job is to help you feel relaxed, give a little direction when it is useful and then allow you to get back to enjoying your wedding.

And sometimes, as Mark and Rosemary showed perfectly, less posing produces far more meaningful photographs.

Autumn can be a fantastic time to get married in Dorset. The light is beautiful, the landscape begins changing colour and popular coastal locations can often feel far more relaxed than during the height of summer.
